Hammes Race - 2010

[Back to topic list] [Back to Notre Dame - Jerry & Dorene Topic]

The Race to New York will take place on Saturday, October 2nd, 2010.

The Race to New York is an Amazing Race style contest which will require participants to perform tasks and solve clues. Tasks and clues will take participants in the race all across the University of Notre Dame campus.

The Race to New York benefits the St. Joseph County United Way and its agency partners.

The winning team will win a trip for (2) two including: (2) two airline tickets, (2) two nights of hotel accommodations and (2) tickets to the Army vs. Notre Dame football game at Yankee Stadium!

The Race to... event (in partnership with Anthony Travel and the United Way) was created in 2009 by the Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore. Challenged with a creative way to raise money for the United Way, the Bookstore decided to raise money and awareness for United Way organizations in our community. By helping the organizations in the United Way, we're giving back to both the campus and community.

Rules and penalties

All teams must abide by the rules set at the beginning of the race. Failure to do so can result in time penalties, which can negatively affect finishing position in the race.

Rules

Unless otherwise stated such as during Blockades, team members must stay within twenty feet of each other and stay close to their assigned bookstore leader.

Teams are forbidden contact with friends, family, and acquaintances during the race, though the race may provide them with an opportunity to make contact at select times.

Unless otherwise stated by the clues, teams are allowed to use the help of locals for navigating and during tasks.

Teams are free to work together at any point unless otherwise stated by the rules.

Teams are forbidden from intentionally or unintentionally hindering the performance of other teams such as by taking extra clues from a clue box or altering the equipment for other teams at a task.

Teams are forbidden from bringing maps, guidebooks, cell phones, personal digital assistants and other similar aids that are not provided at the start of the race.

Teams are not allowed to use their personal items to barter for services on the race. The teams' bags may be subject to review.

Teams are prohibited from begging where it is illegal.

Teams are required to abide by all local laws, including but not limited to, all campus safety laws. Penalties and time credits. The standard penalty for rule infractions is 30 minutes plus the time gained (if any) for breaking the rule. Other penalty times include but are not limited to two hours for bartering goods for services, and three hours for not completing either Bypass option. Penalty times are cumulative. If a player is unable to complete the Blockade, the team is assessed a four hour penalty starting from the time of the arrival of the next team at the Blockade, after which they are given their next clue to proceed. If the penalty is known before the racers arrive at the next clue, they are forced to wait out that time before they can continue on.

Team and Game Understandings

The entrance fee for a team will be ($50) fifty-dollars per team of (2) two. All of this entrance fee will be donated to the United Way, and will be considered a tax donation (write-off) for the participants.

Teams will be defined as two (2) individuals, with all team members being at least (18) eighteen years of age.

Money will not be provided for the contestants. Rather, contestants will have the option to have a combined ($50) fifty dollars between team members.

Team members will have the option to buy information from a Race representative.

There will be (3) three levels of clues that the teams will have the option to purchase. There will be a ($5) five dollar, ($10) ten dollar, and ($20) twenty dollar clue. All money used to purchase clues will go directly to the United Way.

Teams can be sponsored by a specific department if the department desires. The department has the option to be responsible for the entrance fee, but not money for contestants.

Clues will be provided for all teams; however teams are expected to solve the clues while adhering to the rules of the game. This will require using the help of locals (which will be set around campus) as well as designated areas that will have internet access to help with clues. Failure to comply with rules during contest will result in time penalties with possible disqualification.

The check-in mat will require all teams to check in with the race official at the end of each clue. This will also mark the completion of one task, and lead the team to the next clue. Failure to check-in properly could lead to time penalties.

A bypass is defined as a decision that is presented to the team as a choice between two tasks. There will be several details about each task, and may require the team to travel a short distance to the different task locations. One task is typically less physically demanding but is tedious and requires some amount of time and/or thinking to complete. The other is usually a more physically demanding or frightening option that, depending upon the team's ability, may take less time to complete. A team may choose to switch tasks as many times as they wish with no penalty other than the time lost in attempting the tasks and traveling between task locations.

A blockade is defined as a task that only one team member may perform. The clue is given as a cryptic question, such as "Who's REALLY hungry?" or "Who wants to get down and dirty?" Based on this information and observation of any other racers at the task, the team must decide which member is doing the task before reading the rest of the description. Once a team member has been selected, they cannot switch. The blockade task is performed only by the selected racer while their partner waits in a designated area, though the partner is able to supply words of encouragement.

A yield is defined as an option a team has to hold another team back from advancing for a specific amount of time on a task. A yield can be purchased for (30) thirty dollars, and can only be purchased once per team.

Use of profane, offensive, threatening, or intimidating language during events towards another team, player, or any other staff member (of the bookstore and/or campus) for any reason can and probably will result in a race misconduct/suspension. Fighting with or provoking another player, team,or any other staff member (of the bookstore and/or campus) to engage in suchwill be subject to suspension. Any player or team who under any circumstancescommits an assault on other teams, players, or any other staff member (of the bookstore and/or campus) may be subject to, amongst other things, suspension,and/or detainment by law enforcement officials.
