The best university bookstore anywhere as acclaimed by observers upon a visit. The present Hammes Bookstore, dedicated in 1999, is the evolution which began in Baden Hall and later became the Hammes Bookstore in a new building dedicated in 1955. President Rev. John J. Cavanaugh had the vision to forge ahead with new programs and physical structures to continue to attract quality students and faculty. New programs and new structures caused a negative effect on funds needed to operate the university and service the students and faculty because student's room, board and tuition did not cover those kind of costs. Romy and Dorothy Hammes did not want to be a part of programs or structures that produced a loss, so Romy, knew a bookstore with related fan items could produce a profit to help underwrite the losses of programs and added structures that were needed.
Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh C.S.C. was the person that nurtured Romy and Dorothy to establish the Hammes Bookstore as a reality in 1955.
Rev. Edward A. Malloy C.S.C. knew a good thing. With the assistance of Frank Eck and university funds generated from the operation between 1955 and 1999, a new building enabled the continuance the Romy and Dorothy Hammes legacy. In appreciation for honoring that legacy Dorene and Jerry Hammes established several endowments during the Generation Campaign which now includes 3 Notre Dame Hammes generations.
The bookstore is one of hundreds granted requests from Dorothy and Romy around the world on 5 continents, in 31 countries and numerous states.
