Ordained on June 23, 1917; appointed Bishop of Reno, April 24, 1931 and consecrated on July 22, 1931; appointed Co-Adjutor Bishop of Dallas cum jure successionis on February 8, 1952; succeeded to the See on August 19, 1954; resigned August 27, 1969; died August 16, 1980




Most Reverend Robert J. Dwyer, D.D., Ph.D.
Ordained on June 11, 1932; appointed May 20, 1952 consecrated August 5, 1952. Elevated to Archiepiscopal Dignity and promoted to Portland in Oregon, December 14, 1966; resigned January 22, 1974; died March 24, 1976

Whereas,Bishop Gorman Roman Catholic High School opened its doors on September 7, 1954 and was officially dedicated October 24, 1954, by the then, Diocese of Reno; and

Whereas, the School is named in honor of Thomas K. Gorman, the first bishop of the Nevada Diocese housed in Reno, and the land was donated by Romy Hammes, father-in-law of former Nevada Supreme Court Justice John Mowbray whose children are graduates of Bishop Gorman High School; and

Whereas, from its inception in 1954 through its first 45 years of existence, Bishop Gorman High School was administered by the Clerics of St. Viator - The Viatorians - a religious community of men from Illinois committed to the educational mission of the Church; and
Whereas, Bishop Gorman High School is the only Roman Catholic high school in the Southern Nevada area; and


Whereas, the outstanding co-ed student body represents all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and ethnicities throughout the Southern Nevada area, many of whom, after graduation, have become leaders in the State of Nevada including former Governor Bob Miller and current Clark County Sheriff Bill Young; and

Whereas, more than 8,000 students graduated from Bishop Gorman High School since the first graduating class in 1957; and
Whereas, Christian, Catholic principles and academic excellence are the trademarks of Bishop Gorman High School given its superior faculty, and dedicated staff; and


Whereas, Bishop Gorman High School TEACHES the Gospel of Jesus Christ, PREPARES students for higher education and CREATES a community where service is valued and celebrated, as proclaimed in their Mission Statement; and

Whereas, at their 22nd annual Knight of the Gael, by reconvening the past honorees from its most distinguished list, Bishop Gorman High School recognizes these benefactors and the past Viatorian leaders for their generosity, commitment and leadership; and

Whereas, the State of Nevada wishes to congratulate the current students, alumni, faculty, staff and the parents for their determination, dedication, perseverance and sacrifices in making and maintaining the outstanding tradition and success of Bishop Gorman High School for the past 50 years;

Now, therefore, I, Kenny C. Guinn, Governor of the State of Nevada, do hereby proclaim March 10, 2004, as a day in recognition of
