Peter Hofweber & Sons - 1907
[Back to topic list] [Back to La Crosse, Wisconsin - 1916 Topic]
Dear Jerry Hammes,
Thank you for your request for information from the La Crosse Public Library Archives. Your question was forwarded to us from our reference department. In the 1907 La Crosse city directories P. Hofweber & Sons (Peter, Joseph, and Peter Jr.) are listed as plumbers who also work with gasoline engines, windmills and pumps. The 1909 city directory P. Hofweber & Sons (Peter, Peter Jr. and August) list their business as plumbing, steam and hot water heating, gas fitting, and agents for Ford automobiles. Their business was listed under both Plumbers and Automobiles- Dealer and Repairers in the business index of that directory. They may have started their Ford dealership in 1907, soon after that year's directory was published and it just wasn't listed until the 1909 city directory. The last listing for Peter Hofweber and Son as Ford dealers is the 1915 city directory. By 1917 John Hofweber, a son, was listed as a dealer for the Oakland motor car, and Peter was no longer listed as a dealer for a specific make of car. He was, however, listed as an automobile dealer through 1926 and as an auto repairman through the 1930 city directories. Peter died on May 1, 1941. I hope this information is helpful. Thanks again for your question.
Sincerely,
Peg Jerome
